Objectives: The UC3M-Santander Big Data Institute (IBiDat) (www.ibidat.es) is a joint initiative by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Banco Santander. It was founded in 2015 and it has rapidly become an institution of reference in the area of Big Data Analytics in Spain. IBiDat’s goal is to apply cutting-edge research to solve industry problems as well as to develop specific industry-based training and teaching activities in the area of Big Data Analytics.
The Institute counts with a team of 7 full-time outstanding researchers as well as more than 40 fellow affiliated researchers from multiple disciplines: statistics, economics, finance, computer science, engineering, etc.

As a high quality research institute, the PostDocs in IBiDat should be capable of performing those tasks expected from an early career faculty in academia adapted to the institute’s focus on R&D applied to industry challenges. This offers our PostDocs a twofold career development in both academia and industry towards his/her next professional step.

Position: The main tasks performed by IBiDat PostDocs include:

  • Lead and participate in R&D projects with private companies.
  • Lead and participate in proposal preparation for public funding programs such as: EU programs (H2020 and FP9) or National and Regional Research Programs.
  • Preparation and participation in Big Data and Machine Learning courses and masters.
  • Conduct high quality research that leads to publications in top venues (journals and conferences).

 Salary: 32,000 €/ year.
Extra economic compensation might be possible through the participation in projects and/or teaching activities of the Institute.

Duration: 2 years (1+1). The continuation for the second year (upon available funding) will be confirmed through a performance assessment of the first year.
Extension further than 2 years could be possible, subject to funding availability and performance criteria.

Requirements: 

  • A PhD degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Finance or related fields on the starting date.
  • Experience in R&D projects with companies or from public funding programs.
  • Good publication record in top journals and/or conferences in the discipline of the candidate.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong analytical and modelling skills

Objectives: The goal of this project is to design algorithms for transmission and reception in massive MIMO systems where there is little or none Channel State Information (CSI) required in the transmitter side. They will be optimized to increase the spectral efficiency in a given cell even with low signal to noise ratio (SNR). These algorithms will be based in non-coherent processing (no CSI required at all), spatial modulation and/or antenna selection techniques (reduced CSI required), or combinations of the three. With this approach, the potential improvements in capacity and energy efficiency of massive MIMO can be leveraged without the need to estimate too many channels and the inherent pilot contamination problems that are today the bottleneck for the implementation of these systems are avoided.

Expected Results: New algorithms contributing to increase the capacity and energy efficiency of future networks where small base stations may be equipped with a very large number of antennas. The achieved performance will be analysed by link-level simulations and a selected set of techniques will be prototyped for a proof of concept with a reduced number of antennas to keep complexity reduced.

Objectives: The goal of this project is to design scheduling algorithms that combined with the pre-coders existing in the literature and also being designed by other ESRs, will achieve interference management and cancellation in small cell heterogeneous environments working at mmW frequencies. In particular, hybrid digital-analogue precoding techniques requiring little Channel State Information (CSI) and data sharing will be considered and the scheduling will decide what users to align and how the resources should be shared among the different tiers of the communication in heterogeneous networks with coexistence of small cells and macro-cells. The problem of ensuring continuous coverage under the challenging propagation characteristic of mmW will be tackled by the resource allocation at the different tiers.

Expected Results: New scheduling algorithms will be developed contributing to increase the capacity of future networks where small cells are densely deployed and mmW frequencies are used to take advantage of the wide spectrum availability. The achieved performance will be analysed by system-level simulations and a selected set of techniques will be prototyped for a proof of concept.

Objectives: The solutions based on visible light communications (VLC) are especially attractive for hostile environments where the use of radio-frequency (RF) systems is avoided, e.g., industry 4.0, tunnel construction or oil&gas sector. However, these environments require non-common lighting, i.e., high-power LED, light propagation in industrial areas or high density of light sources. Moreover, in contrast to the typical scenarios, the VLC systems are not under the umbrella of other RF systems such as WiFi o pico/femto cells when applied in the considered scenarios. The goal of this project is the development of resilient interference management schemes for RF hostile environments where the deployment of LED lights is employed for providing connectivity, which cannot be provided through RF systems. Specifically, the considered schemes must provide satisfactory data rates and latency for industrial environments while ensuring constant illumination.

Expected Results: Development of a VLC architecture comprising LED lights, receivers and signal processing algorithms for RF hostile environments. Solutions proved through a prototype working in an operational environment in order to facilitate the introduction of the developed schemes and algorithms in the industry 4.0 market segment during the following years.

The Department of Signal Theory & Communications is integrated into the Polytechnic School of Universidad Carlos III, where several Engineering degrees are imparted, and located in Leganés, a lively town 15 kms away from the center of Madrid and well communicated by public transport (train, subway and bus).

Position: We invite applications for one to cover one post­doctoral position to carry out research in sequential Monte Carlo methodologies for tracking of high dimensional dynamical systems. This includes classical multi­target tracking applications as well as the forecasting of destructive meteorological phenomena.

We offer a 1­ year contract, which can be extended for up to two additional years. The minimum salary is 23,000 euros/year, but this can be negotiated, depending on the candidate qualifications.

The grant supporting this position is funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Global.

Candidate Job Activity: The candidate will be designing and testing Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) to generate millimetre wave carrier frequency for ultra-broadband wireless links based on the optical heterodyne technique, using fully monolithic mode-locked laser structures with phase tuning sections. The main objective is to develop On-chip data modulation and optical filtering schemes that combined with the mode-locked laser produce a tunable source with the phase noise characteristics of a mode locked laser that can generate carrier waves in bands allocated to wireless communications, 71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz. This work is aimed to let the candidate earn the doctor degree from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

The candidate will work closely with two FIWIN5G partners with whom secondments are scheduled, Denmark Technical University (DK), and III-V LAB (FR).

Candidate Job Activity: The candidate will be working on the design of antennas to be integrated with high-speed photodiodes to radiate the electrical signal into the air, and establish a wireless link. The main objective is to optimize the design of antennas that can either be grown monolithically with the high speed photodiodes as well as on low-cost laminates in order to produce compact, low cost emission structures to radiate a modulated millimetre carrier wave. This work is aimed to let the candidate earn the doctor degree from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

The candidate will work closely with two FIWIN5G partners with whom secondments are scheduled, University Duisburg-Essen (DE), and III-V LAB (FR).
