Pedro Lains is research professor at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, visiting professor at Católica-Lisbon School of Business and Economics and New University of Lisbon, and member of the Instituto Laureano Figuerola (U. Carlos III). He has a B.A. in Economics (New University of Lisbon) and a PhD in History (EUI, Florence). He has published in Análise Social,European Review of Economic History, Explorations in Economic History, Historical Research, Open Economies Review, Research in Economic History, Journal of Iberian and Latin-America Economic History and Scandinavian Economic History Review. His most recent books are: Paying for the Liberal State. The Rise of Public Finances in Nineteenth Century Europe (co-ed. with J. L. Cardoso, Cambridge University Press, 2010); História da Caixa Geral de Depósitos, 1876-2010 (3 vols., Imprensa de Ciências Sociais, 2002-2011); História Económica de Portugal, 1143-2010 (with L. F. Costa e S. M. Miranda, Esfera dos Livros, 2011); and An Economic History of Portugal (with L. F. Costa e S. M. Miranda, Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2015). Presently, his main research is on Portuguese agricultural history in the long-run and the history of Bank of Portugal.
