He is currently Director of the Institute UC3M-BS of Financial Big Dara and Full Professor in the Department of Statistics. Previously he has been Rector of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (2007-2015), Head of the Department of Statistics, UC3M, Professor at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (1972-1990) and Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago (1987, 1999, 2001).and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1983-84).
He has obtained the Youden Prize for the best article in Technometrics, ASQ, (2006), The Prize Jaime I for research in Economics (2011), the Engineer of the year Award from the Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros Industriales de Madrid (2012), and the Lifetime Career Award from the Alumni Association of the ETSII-UPM (2011). He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (2006), the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (2000), and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute (1986).
He has been Associate Editor of several International journals and President of European Courses In Advanced Statistics (ECAS), (1998-2002), Member of the Board of Directors, Inter. Soc. for Bayesian Analysis, (1998 – 2000), Vice-president, Inter-American Statistical Institute (1998-2000), and President of the Spanish Statistical Society (1989-92).
He has supervised more than 25 Ph. D. thesis, published 13 books and more than 200 research papers on Time Series Analysis, Linear Models, Robustness, Bayesian Statistics, Multivariate Statistics, Quality Methods and Econometrics.
