Summary

The use of renewable energy sources for electricity production entails the appearance of small producers that must be integrated in the distribution networks. With the expansion of the distributed generation systems new challenges and opportunities that will require the evolution and optimisation of the present distribution electrical networks will appear. Renewable Energy Sources (RES) must be totally integrated in the distribution networks and participating in the overall grid control, appearing the concept of active control in distribution networks with RES.

The SEIRES project - “Strategies for Efficient Integration of Renewable Energy Sources” is a research Project supported by the Spanish Minister of Science and Innovation under contract ENE2009-13883-CO2.

This project focuses on the application of control strategies in active networks for improving RES integration into power networks.

The primary target of this coordinated project between the University Carlos III of Madrid and Robotiker consists of advancing towards the mutual knowledge and the coordination of efforts in the investigation around the integration of renewable energy sources in power systems, identifying the necessities as much disciplinary as infrastructural and promoting the integration of renewable energy sources in power networks and the use of active control strategies for efficient management of smart grids.

Objectives

The main objective of this project is the design of a control strategy with an active network management for improving RES integration into power networks.

In order to fulfil this objective, the following milestones are addressed:

  • The preparation of recommendations in active networks and requirements of distributed generators to ensure the integration of DG units into power networks.
  • The creation of communication architectures in active networks, identifying all the monitoring and control information for the management of the future electrical grid and implementing the required IEC61850-7-420 communication protocol services, both in the PV inverter and in the rest of local production controllers.
  • Design of local control strategies of DG sources to offer voltage regulation, reactive power management and fault ride through capability.
  • Design of the coordinated control strategy in active networks with renewable sources and FACTS units for voltage regulation and reactive power management.

The experimental validation of the control strategies developed for the active network and the final implementation of the communication protocol among distributed energy sources will be tested in a prototype test-bed which involves a PV inverter, a variable speed wind turbine, a statcom and distributed loads.
